Foot Pain Q & A

What causes foot pain?

Foot pain causes can include:

  • Arthritis: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout
  • Fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Bone spurs
  • Bunions
  • Bone infections
  • Tendonitis in the Achilles, posterior tibial tendon, or peroneal tendon
  • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage)
  • Flat feet
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Neuromas
  • Corns and calluses
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Plantar warts

You could have more than one cause of foot pain. For example, an untreated ingrown toenail can easily get infected, at which point you can have foot pain both from the skin puncture and the infection.

How is foot pain diagnosed?

Your Gelbmann Podiatry doctor asks about the pain intensity, circumstances, and frequency to narrow down possible causes. They perform a clinical foot and ankle exam and may recommend imaging tests to determine what's going on beneath the skin.

Gelbmann Podiatry has on-site digital X-ray and ultrasound imaging, along with a 3D digital scanner that maps your foot for custom orthotics and braces.

With these imaging tests, your podiatrist can see the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles in your foot to make the most accurate diagnosis.

What does a foot pain treatment plan include?

The majority of foot pain responds well to conservative in-office treatments. The Gelbmann Podiatry specialists may use one or more of the following foot pain treatments.

  • Custom orthotics
  • Splints, braces, or casts
  • Oral anti-inflammatory medication
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Topical pain relievers, such as HempNesic® CBD gel and Bako products
  • Injections (cortisone and anesthetics)
  • Ultrasound therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Prescribed exercises
  • Special footwear
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Specialized diabetic foot care including wound care and limb salvage

Every case of foot pain is different, so the Gelbmann Podiatry physicians use a case-by-case approach. In some cases, you may need surgery for problems like severe bunions or other foot deformities.
